Desk Report:
According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election schedule, the Election Commissioner heard about 30 objections submitted on the draft voters’ list at the BCB office from 10 am to 5 pm today. Former national team captain Tamim Iqbal appeared in one of them.
Tamim has been nominated as a councilor from Old DOHS Club. Although there were no major questions publicly about his candidacy, an objection letter was submitted yesterday with an anonymous signature challenging Tamim’s involvement with the club. Tamim expressed surprise over the matter.
Tamim did not say much about the letter to the Election Commission at around 2:45 pm. However, he was present at the hearing on the objection to excluding his club Dhanmondi Cricket Club from the draft voters’ list. After the hearing, Tamim told the media, “If someone challenges my councilorship, it is sad. I am eligible at every stage. Even if it is banned, everyone will understand why it is being done.” The people of the country will understand.
Tamim also said that the commission did not ask him any questions about the letter. However, he himself raised the issue of the letter. In his words, ‘I was not asked any questions about it. I think the commission did not accept this letter. I had to provide a voter ID to submit the objection, but the person who objected in my name is a councilor of which club, in which committee, it is not known. So how can he complain?’
Tamim believes that this objection was not accepted. Tamim does not think that the matter will continue in the future, ‘I was not asked any questions about it, I said something on my own. So I think the letter was not accepted. Nothing else will happen about it tomorrow either. There is nothing surprising.’
However, Tamim admitted that there is pressure, ‘I am trying fearlessly, but the pressure is immense. Maybe my councilorship may be canceled tomorrow, a writ or a case may be filed in court. But everyone knows very well why it will happen.’
